Lanzarote is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain. Boasting a clement year round climate, wonderful beaches and three fantastic holiday resorts. Each boasting its own unique character and identity.
Puerto del Carmen
Puerto del Carmen is the Grande Dame of Lanzarote´s tourist industry. As this is the spot where the modern holiday era first took off on the island, with intrepid travellers navigating dirt track roads from the airport nearby to stay at the only hotel, the Los Fariones, back in the early 1970s.
Today this former fishing village has of course changed beyond all recognition – with development now extending some 8km from the Old Town harbour area in the direction of Arrecife airport. And with visitors now numbering in their hundreds of thousands every year.
These days’ tourists are just as likely to book one of the many modern villas in Puerto del Carmen as they are a hotel room. As the accent on the island has shifted sway from package tourism towards independent travel. Either way Puerto del Carmen remains an excellent base for a holiday on the island thanks to its central location and close proximity to key tourist attractions such as the Timanfaya National Park.
Playa Blanca
Playa Blanca is the new kid on the block in terms of Lanzarote´s main holiday resorts. As it was developed long after either Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise to the north. However it has quickly established itself as the second most popular destination, thanks to the fact that it offers excellent beaches and some of the most luxurious villas in Lanzarote .
Playa Blanca is located right at the southern end of Lanzarote and as a result tends to benefit from the best of the weather on the island. Despite the fact that Lanzarote measures just 60km by 40km there is still a very pronounced microclimate at work here and during the winter months especially Playa Blanca can be basking in sunshine whilst the north of the island is shrouded in cloud.
Costa Teguise
Costa Teguise can be found in the north around a fifteen minute transfer from the airport at Arrecife. It was developed under the aegis of a local artist called César Manrique and as a result remains a stylish resort to this day. Ideally suited to couples and young families.
Costa Teguise is famously home to the Gran Melia Salinas, widely regarded as one of the best hotels in Lanzarote . Where guest can enjoy five star opulence in luxurious surroundings.
